Simple Chocolate Sponge Cake recipe

This is one of the simplest chocolate sponge cake recipes out there and it is absolutely fantastic. Try making it with the kids on a rainy weekend – it only really has two steps so it’s very simple to follow. The cake itself is moist so you could serve it with cream or without cream, it’s entirely up to you!

Ingredients:

  • 200g caster sugar
  • 125g self-raising flour
  • 2 tbsp. cocoa powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 125ml milk
  • 75g melted butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Method of Preparation:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C and grease and line a 20cm cake tin.

  2. Sieve together the flour and cocoa powder into one bowl and stir in the sugar.

  3. Add all of the wet ingredients – eggs, vanilla, milk and melted butter. Stir for a few minutes until everything is combined.

  4. Pour the batter into the prepared cake tin and bake the cake for around 45 minutes.

You can either serve the cake warm from the oven or cool, it’s up to you! The recipe will yield around 10 portions.
